Peacekeepers Remembrance - August 9

On August 9, 1974, a Canadian military aircraft on United Nations Peacekeeping duty was shot down over Syria. All 9 Canadian military personnel on board were killed. It was the largest single-day loss of Canadians on a peacekeeping mission.

National Peacekeepers’ Day was established in Canada in 2008. It provides an opportunity for Canadians to express the pride and respect they have toward personnel of the Canadian Armed Forces, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and provincial and municipal police forces, as well as Canadian diplomats and civilians who have worked in support of international peace and security operations.  (source-  http://www.veterans.gc.ca/eng/feature/peacekeeper)

Annually on Aug 9 the Canadian Association of Vetrans in United Nations Peacekeeping (CAVUNP) honours the fallen in a special service at Peacekeepers Park (pictured above) in Angus Ontario, This service is attended by serving members of the Canadian military, veterans, Royal Canadian Legion members and members from the public.

CAVUNP Central Ontario Chapter is responsible for the maintenence, updating and upkeep of Peacekeepers Park. Donations are greatly appreciated to help defray the costs. For more information please go to http://www.unvets.org/barrie/index.html
